Will a tag system/category section be created for thi mod similar to the old blog mod?

Nah, I do not think that will help.

I have a pretty good idea of how I will set it up and it would probably take more work using older code than writing it from scratch.

I have released an alpha package of the Blog Tags plugin here:

Still somewhat basic, but what is there seems to work.
